MTF Questions at EDAIC: The Strategy That Raises Your Score

The MTF (Multiple True/False) format is the backbone of the EDAIC Part I exam. Understanding how it works — and the optimal answering strategy — can make the difference between passing and failing.

What an MTF question looks like

An MTF question has two components:

  1. The stem: an introductory statement or a clinical context.
  2. Five statements (A–E): each must be evaluated independently as true or false.

Unlike single-best-answer questions, here each statement is a mini-question. A question with five statements is, in practice, five separate decisions.

The golden rule: no penalty

Since 2014, EDAIC has removed negative marking. In practice:

  • Correct answer: +1
  • Wrong answer: 0
  • No answer: 0

Strategic implication: never leave a statement unanswered. If you don't know, guess — a random answer gives you a 50% chance, while not answering guarantees zero.

How to read the statements

Watch for absolute keywords

Terms like "always", "never", "all", "exclusively" often turn a statement false. Physiology rarely works in absolutes.

Read each statement as a standalone sentence

Don't let statement A influence your interpretation of statement D. They are independent.

Beware of association traps

Two correct concepts linked by a wrong causal relationship = a false statement. Check not just the facts, but the link between them.

Time management

With hundreds of statements to evaluate, pace matters:

  • Allocate a fixed time per question and don't exceed it.
  • Flag uncertain questions and come back at the end.
  • Save the last few minutes to complete any statement left unanswered (see the golden rule).

Train like the real exam

The only real way to master the MTF format is repeated practice on quality questions, under exam-like conditions. Track your statistics: identify the subjects with the lowest correct-answer rate and focus there.
