The safest verified answer to “How long is EDAIC Part 1?” is format-specific. The current public paper regulations allow 120 minutes for each of the two 60-question papers. ESAIC's live Part I page also identifies some centres as computer centres, but that public page does not state one general computer-centre duration that this article can safely apply to every candidate.

Do not borrow a timing from a different ESAIC activity. In particular, the 2026 On-Line Assessment (OLA) regulations describe 90-minute sets, but OLA has its own regulations and should not be presented as proof of the duration of a computer-delivered EDAIC Part I sitting. Your admission letter, the current Part I tutorial, centre instructions and any format-specific regulations determine what applies.

A paper candidate must also transfer decisions to a machine-readable answer sheet; a computer-centre candidate records them through the assessment system. This guide converts confirmed information into practice checkpoints and shows how to adapt the method once your own allowed time is known. The suggested pacing systems are candidate strategies, not additional ESAIC rules.

What the official documents confirm

Paper examination

The paper candidate regulations state that each examination paper must be completed within 120 minutes. The current Diploma Guide describes 60 questions in each paper.

That gives an average of:

  • two minutes per stem;
  • 24 seconds per true/false response if the total were divided evenly across 300 responses.

The second figure is only a mathematical average. Reading the stem serves all five statements, and some decisions are faster than others. Use the two-minute-per-stem figure for broad checkpoints, not as a demand to spend exactly 24 seconds on each line.

Paper candidates must also mark the separate answer sheet correctly. The official MCQ instructions say that only the answer sheet is used for marking, not notes in the booklet. Transfer and checking therefore need explicit time.

Computer-centre examination

The live Part I page says that candidates assigned to computer delivery still attend a designated examination centre; Part I is not taken from home. It also links a current tutorial for online centres. At the time this article was checked, the public Part I page did not give a single exact duration for all computer centres.

The 2026 OLA regulations are useful only as an example of a separate ESAIC computer-based assessment: they describe two 90-minute sets. OLA is not interchangeable with EDAIC Part I, so do not use those 90 minutes as your Part I allowance unless the official instructions for your actual sitting explicitly say so.

Once your computer-centre allowance is confirmed, calculate broad checkpoints from that number. Divide the allowed minutes by 60 for an average per stem, then reserve time for navigation, unanswered-response checks and final submission. This is planning arithmetic, not an official per-question limit.

Verify your format before building the final plan

Do not assume that everyone in the same exam year has the same interface or marking workflow. ESAIC's active Part I page identifies computer centres and links the relevant regulations and tutorial.

Check:

  1. the centre on your registration confirmation;
  2. whether that centre is listed as paper or computer for the active cycle;
  3. the language recorded for the sitting;
  4. the regulations linked for that format;
  5. the official tutorial, if ESAIC provides one;
  6. arrival and identification instructions;
  7. any approved additional-time arrangement;
  8. the admission letter for centre-specific details.

If two public documents appear inconsistent, ask the ESAIC Examinations Office before practising the wrong format. A blog or question platform cannot override your admission instructions.

What the clock is measuring

Each of the 60 stems has five independently judged statements. Therefore, one paper or set contains 300 response decisions. Time is used for four different jobs:

  • reading and interpreting the stem;
  • deciding each statement;
  • recording the response in the required place;
  • reviewing unanswered or uncertain items.

Paper candidates have a fifth operational risk: transferring the intended response accurately from booklet notes to the OMR sheet. A correct judgement that is transferred to the wrong row does not become correct through knowledge.

A paper-format pacing method

One useful practice strategy is to divide the 120 minutes into controlled phases.

Phase 1: steady first pass

Aim to make a defensible decision on every response while marking the booklet clearly according to the official instructions. Keep a simple symbol for items requiring a second look; do not create an elaborate coding system.

Broad checkpoints could be:

  • question 20 by around 35–40 minutes;
  • question 40 by around 70–80 minutes;
  • question 60 with enough time remaining for transfer and review.

These are candidate checkpoints, not ESAIC rules. Adjust them after full practice. Someone who records on the answer sheet continuously will use time differently from someone who transfers in blocks.

Phase 2: OMR transfer

Budget this from the start. The official instructions require complete marks in the appropriate true or false circle using the specified pencil and explain that only the answer sheet counts.

Transfer in a way that protects row alignment:

  • say the question number silently;
  • locate the same number on the sheet;
  • transfer A–E in order;
  • check that each response has one intended mark;
  • pause at fixed boundaries such as every five questions;
  • verify the next booklet number before continuing.

Do not wait until the final seconds to discover that several rows are blank.

Phase 3: targeted review

Return to flagged statements after all responses are recorded. Change an answer only when you can name the specific reason: a missed qualifier, corrected calculation, recalled principle or recognised transfer error.

Anxiety alone is not evidence. Repeatedly revisiting the same ambiguous statement can consume time that would correct several clearer omissions.

A computer-format pacing method

Build this only after the official allowance for your sitting is known. Divide the available working time into thirds, then keep a separate final review reserve. For example, the first checkpoint can sit near question 20 and the second near question 40, but their clock times must come from your confirmed duration rather than from an OLA document or an old blog post.

Do not treat a checkpoint as a reason to click randomly. Its purpose is to reveal drift early. If the first third consumes close to half of the available time, the strategy must change before the final screen.

The actual interface determines how answers, unanswered responses, navigation and submission are represented. Use ESAIC's current tutorial and centre information. Do not assume that a commercial mock's buttons or keyboard controls will exist in the official assessment.

The live Part I page states that there is no negative marking and candidates should answer all questions. Build a final unanswered-response check into practice. Use only the navigation and submission behaviour shown in the official tutorial and instructions for your sitting.

How long should one difficult stem receive?

There is no official maximum. Create a personal “stop-loss” based on full simulations.

A practical rule is:

  1. read the stem with each response;
  2. answer decisions supported by a clear principle;
  3. mark uncertain statements for review;
  4. move on when additional thought is no longer producing new evidence;
  5. return only after the first pass is complete.

Spending six minutes to resolve one subtle stem can cost the first reading of several later stems. The aim is not to feel certain about everything; it is to use limited time across the whole paper.

Do not apply simplistic test tricks such as “absolute words are always false”. Qualifiers deserve attention, but content decides truth.

Build a timed-practice ladder

Starting with full 60-question simulations can measure failure without teaching the underlying process. Increase duration in stages.

Stage 1: untimed accuracy

Use small focused sets. Explain every response and review the source. Learn the MTF mechanics without clock pressure.

Stage 2: short timed blocks

Practise 10 stems under the average pace for your format. Record whether time was lost to knowledge, reading, calculation, indecision or answer recording.

Stage 3: 20-question checkpoints

Use one third of a paper or set. Practise the exact checkpoint you intend to use on exam day.

Stage 4: 40-question endurance

Test concentration beyond a comfortable short set. Track whether accuracy or pace changes after the midpoint.

Stage 5: full paper or set

Use fresh mixed material, the correct timing and the correct answer-recording method. For paper simulation, include an OMR-style transfer workflow without copying ESAIC's copyrighted sheet. For computer simulation, use on-screen responses but do not assume identical official controls.

Stage 6: two-part rehearsal

When practical, simulate both papers or sets with the break and order described for your format. The second part tests fatigue management as well as knowledge.

Review timing data, not just the score

After each timed attempt, record:

  • last question reached on the first pass;
  • time at questions 20 and 40;
  • number of blank responses;
  • number of transfer or navigation errors;
  • number of answers changed;
  • outcome of changed answers;
  • accuracy in the first, middle and final thirds;
  • domains causing disproportionate delay;
  • high-confidence errors;
  • subjective concentration.

This reveals the real constraint. If time is lost because physics calculations are unfamiliar, general speed drills will not repair the gap. If row alignment fails during OMR transfer, another textbook chapter will not solve it.

A four-week timing block

Week 1: establish the baseline

Complete two 20-question mixed blocks. Use the correct format average but prioritise clean decisions and recording.

Week 2: repair the bottleneck

Work on the dominant cause of delay: knowledge retrieval, calculations, stem reading, indecision, transfer or screen navigation. Repeat 20-question blocks.

Week 3: extend endurance

Complete one 40-question set and one full-format simulation. Compare first and final thirds.

Week 4: rehearse and stabilise

Complete full timed work with consistent checkpoints. Avoid changing the entire method after one unusual result.

Repeat a shorter version later in the countdown. The final-month plan can place these rehearsals around content revision.

Protect accuracy under time pressure

Speed comes from reducing avoidable work:

  • read the stem together with each response;
  • translate complicated wording into a precise claim;
  • retrieve the deciding principle;
  • use units and direction checks;
  • avoid reopening a settled response without evidence;
  • keep answer recording consistent;
  • use simple flagging;
  • monitor checkpoints at planned intervals.

Do not “save time” by skimming the qualifier that determines truth. Nor should you re-derive a familiar fact three times because the response pattern looks aesthetically unlikely.

No negative marking changes the final check

The current Part I page and Guide say incorrect and blank responses do not incur negative marks, while correct responses earn credit. Candidates are instructed to answer all responses.

Therefore, final checks should prioritise:

  1. unanswered responses;
  2. answer-sheet row alignment or screen status;
  3. clearly identified transfer errors;
  4. flagged statements where a specific correction is available;
  5. general re-reading only if time remains.

Do not leave a cluster blank because certainty is low. Follow the instructions applicable to your sitting.

Arrival time is part of time management

The current paper regulations tell candidates to be ready to enter with identification and the admission letter 30 minutes before the start, unless otherwise specified. Computer-centre candidates should follow the arrival time in their own official communication rather than assuming that a rule from OLA or a paper centre applies unchanged.

Build a buffer for travel, security and finding the room. A perfect question pace cannot compensate for late arrival. Prepare the required items the night before and do not bring prohibited materials into the assessment room.

Candidates with an approved condition should read the current rules on additional time and documentary deadlines. Do not rely on an older article because deadlines and required professional evidence can differ between documents and formats.
