How to Make EDAIC Study Notes You Will Actually Review
Build concise, sourced EDAIC notes that trigger retrieval, connect directly to MTF errors and remain usable throughout a demanding resident rota.

Most EDAIC notes fail for a simple reason: they are designed to capture information, not to trigger retrieval. A beautiful fifty-page summary may feel productive while becoming too long to test, update or revisit on a resident's rota.
Useful EDAIC notes are smaller and more demanding. They compress one concept, expose a relationship, record the source and version, and tell you when to retrieve it again. They connect directly to mistakes in multiple true/false practice rather than forming a parallel textbook.
This guide gives you a concrete system built from concept pages, error notes, diagrams, source tags and review triggers. It also explains when not to take notes—often the most important efficiency decision.
Give every note a job
Before writing, choose one of four jobs.
Concept note
A concept note explains one mechanism, relationship or framework you must retrieve. It should answer a defined question, such as:
- What determines this variable?
- How do these two drug properties differ?
- Why does this curve move?
- What assumptions make this equation valid?
- Which related concepts are easy to confuse?
If the title is merely “Respiratory physiology”, the note is too broad. If the title is a full textbook sentence, it may be too narrow.
Discrimination note
Multiple true/false questions often turn on distinctions. A discrimination note compares two or more concepts in a small table:

The purpose is not to copy every difference. Capture the differences that would change a true/false judgement.
Error note
An error note records a correction after retrieval. It contains the wrong mental rule, the corrected rule, the evidence and a transfer prompt. It should be linked to an error log rather than buried inside a chapter summary.
Update note
Administrative rules and clinical guidance can change. An update note records:
- issuing body;
- document title;
- version or publication date;
- page or section;
- date you checked it;
- what changed from your previous source;
- which existing notes or questions may be affected.
This prevents a once-correct fragment from becoming an unattributed permanent fact.
The one-page concept template
Use this structure:
Retrieval question: Write one question you should answer with the note closed.
Core model: Explain the relationship in five to eight lines, in your own words.
Diagram or equation: Draw only if spatial or mathematical structure adds meaning.
Boundary conditions: List the assumptions, exceptions or qualifiers that change the statement.
Common confusion: Name the nearest competing concept.
MTF transfer prompts: Write three short statements to judge later, without copying live or protected exam material.
Source tag: Issuer/author, title, edition or version, page/section, date checked.
Review trigger: A future date, a linked error or a confidence rule.
A completed page is not “done”. Its value appears when you can answer the retrieval question later without reading the core model.
Write less after the first pass
The first version will often be too long. Compress it after you understand the topic.
Remove:
- prose already clear in your core book;
- complete drug lists without a decision purpose;
- definitions you can retrieve reliably;
- screenshots that have no annotation;
- copied explanations with no source context;
- duplicate notes created because you forgot the first one existed.
Keep:
- relationships you previously misunderstood;
- qualifiers that repeatedly change answers;
- diagrams you must reconstruct;
- contrasts that produce high-confidence errors;
- source/version information;
- a prompt for delayed retrieval.

Use diagrams for relationships, not decoration
A diagram earns its space when it makes a relationship easier to retrieve than prose.
Useful forms include:
- a labelled curve with axes and directional shifts;
- a compartment or flow model;
- a device pathway;
- a small anatomy sketch with relevant relationships;
- a decision tree for classifying a concept;
- a causal chain from variable to consequence;
- a two-axis matrix for distinctions.
Draw from memory first. Then compare with the source and correct in another colour. The correction shows what retrieval failed; tracing a perfect figure while looking at it does not.
Concept mapping may support integration and critical thinking in medical education, but a map is not automatically active learning. Research comparing retrieval practice with elaborative concept mapping found a strong advantage for retrieval in the studied setting. The practical lesson is to combine them: close the source, construct the map, then test its links.
Tag every claim you may need to update

The date is not a claim that a source remains current forever. It tells future you when verification last occurred.
Use source tags especially for:
- examination format and rules;
- eligibility, fees, dates and centres;
- named guideline recommendations;
- thresholds or classifications;
- drug or device details that could be version-sensitive;
- question explanations that conflict with another source.

Convert notes into MTF practice
Part I questions require independent judgement of five statements. Your note system should rehearse that decision without imitating protected questions.
For each concept page, create three types of original prompt.
The definition shift
Change one essential element of the definition. Avoid cheap tricks; the statement should test whether you know the boundary.
The direction shift
Alter one variable and predict the consequence. This tests a relationship rather than a memorised phrase.
The qualifier shift
Use a conditional word such as “in this setting”, “at equilibrium”, “initially” or “provided that”. The purpose is to practise reading precision, not to assume that every absolute statement is false.
Answer each prompt true or false, assign confidence and explain why. If you cannot explain it, the note is not yet a reliable retrieval tool.

Link notes to questions in both directions
After a question-bank session:
- tag each incorrect or guessed statement by domain;
- locate an existing concept note;
- add the minimum missing relationship or qualifier;
- record the source;
- schedule a new transfer question after a delay.
Do not automatically create a new page for every wrong answer. Most errors belong to an existing model. If five errors produce five isolated notes, you may miss the one underlying misconception.
From each concept note, keep a small evidence line:
Evidence: 12 new statements; 2 errors; 1 high-confidence error; last retest 18 Aug

Review triggers that survive a busy rota
Calendar-only systems can create large queues at the worst time. Use three complementary triggers.
Time trigger
Schedule a brief closed-book retrieval after increasing intervals. Evidence on spacing supports distributed review over massed study, although no single interval is universally optimal for every learner and topic.
Error trigger
If the concept causes another wrong or low-confidence response, move it forward. Repeated error is stronger evidence than an arbitrary due date.
Dependency trigger
Review a foundational note when a linked topic depends on it. Before studying mechanical ventilation, for example, retrieve the respiratory relationships you need; before a pharmacokinetic model, retrieve the underlying variables.
Use the spaced-repetition guide to build a manageable schedule. A missed date does not invalidate the system. Restart with the highest-risk notes rather than trying to clear every overdue item in one sitting.

Skip note-taking when:

- the source itself is concise, searchable and stable;
- you are copying because highlighting feels insufficient;
- the fact belongs in a flashcard or error log rather than a concept model;
- an official rule may change and a live bookmark is safer;
- you have not yet understood the source well enough to compress it;
- you are post-call and transcription is replacing recovery;
- note creation would displace the question review that exposed the gap.
Sometimes the best action is to add one question to your error log and a page reference to the book. Not every topic deserves an original essay.
A 20-minute note workflow
Minutes 0–3: define
Write the retrieval question and decide the note's job. Locate the authoritative source.
Minutes 3–10: learn
Read the minimum section required. Pause to predict relationships and connect them to prior knowledge.
Minutes 10–14: close and reconstruct
Close the source. Write the core model or draw the diagram from memory. Mark uncertainty rather than filling it with a guess.
Minutes 14–17: correct and tag
Reopen the source. Correct omissions, add boundary conditions and record the version/page.
Minutes 17–20: create transfer
Write two or three original MTF prompts and schedule the next retrieval. If the note cannot be used in twenty minutes, narrow its scope.
This is a ceiling, not a target. A simple discrimination table may take five minutes.
Organise by concept, not by resource
A folder structure based on books fragments related knowledge. Prefer:
Paper A- anatomy
- physiology/biochemistry
- pharmacology
- physics/measurement/equipment
- statistics/research
Paper B- general/perioperative
- regional/pain
- special groups/contexts
- internal/emergency medicine
- intensive care

Audit your notes once a week
Ask:
- Which notes were retrieved, not merely opened?
- Which produced high-confidence errors?
- Which have no source/version tag?
- Which exceed one page without a clear reason?
- Which duplicate another note?
- Which are never linked to question evidence?
- Which official or clinical claims need a currency check?
- Which can be archived because retrieval is stable?
Choose a maximum of five repairs. Do not spend the whole weekly review formatting.
Frequently asked questions
Should EDAIC notes be handwritten or digital?
Use the format you can retrieve, search, update and sustain. The important distinction is active reconstruction versus copying, not a universal paper-versus-screen rule.
How long should one concept note be?
Usually one screen or page. If it cannot be retrieved as one model, split it by question or relationship. A comparison table or diagram may be shorter.
Should I make notes before doing questions?
Learn enough to form a basic model, then use questions early. Questions reveal which distinctions deserve a note and prevent indiscriminate summarising.
Can I use AI to write my EDAIC notes?
AI can help organise wording, but it can also invent or blur facts and sources. Verify every claim against authoritative material and ensure you perform retrieval. Never upload confidential exam content.
How often should I review notes?
Use spaced closed-book retrieval, then adapt to error recurrence, importance and the exam date. Rereading every note on a fixed loop is inefficient.
What should I do with old notes?
Tag the source/version. Update central notes when guidance changes; archive superseded material visibly. Do not leave conflicting versions in active revision.
Notes should become smaller as knowledge grows
Good EDAIC notes are not a monument to how much you read. They are a compact set of prompts, models, distinctions and corrections that become easier to retrieve over time.
